Precast Concrete Construction
Pre-cast concrete building systems use concrete elements that are cast off-site under controlled conditions, rather than placed as wet concrete into forms on the job site. In this video, Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute engineer Brian Miller introduces us to some typical pre-cast building elements, and explains how pre-cast systems should be inspected for code compliance and correct installation on the job.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, you should be able to:
- Recognize common precast building components, including different types of wall and floor panels
- Describe the inspection and quality control standards in place at precast production facilities
- Describe the allowable footing types for precast foundations
- List the construction details that should be inspected during field inspection of precast foundation systems
- Explain the details that should be checked during field inspection of above-grade precast wall systems
- Know the connection details that should be inspected during field inspections of precast structures
- Understand when protection from weather is or is not recommended during field erection of precast structures
- List the aspects of a precast building that do not require field inspection because they are quality-controlled at the precast plant
